FAQ

Forestry Mulching Questions, Answered

Straight answers about cost, what the machine can handle, and what your property looks like when we leave. Short version: about $800–$1,200 an acre, one pass, no piles.

How much does forestry mulching cost per acre in Upstate SC?

Most ORA jobs run about $800 to $1,200 per acre. Where yours lands depends on two things: how thick the vegetation is, and the grade (slope) of the property. Light brush on flat ground sits toward the low end. A dense thicket on a steep hillside sits toward the high end. Jason gives you a firm price after a free site visit, so there are no surprises. What is forestry mulching?

Forestry mulching clears land with one machine. ORA uses a Kioti track loader with a Baumalight forestry mulching head, a spinning drum full of carbide teeth that grinds brush, briars, saplings and small trees into mulch right where they stand. It's one pass: no burning, no hauling and no brush piles. The mulch stays on the ground as cover. More on forestry mulching.

Is forestry mulching better than bulldozing or burning?

For most brush and overgrown land, yes. Bulldozing pushes everything into piles and scrapes up topsoil, and then the piles have to be burned or hauled off. Mulching does it in one pass and leaves the topsoil in place with a protective mulch layer on top, which helps with erosion. There's no burn pile to babysit, no smoke for the neighbors and no haul-off bill.

What size trees and brush can you mulch?

Brush, briars, vines, underbrush, saplings and small trees. The equipment handles trees up to about 8 inches in diameter efficiently. If there's bigger timber on the property, Jason will look at it on-site and tell you up front what makes sense.

What areas do you serve?

Easley, Pickens, Anderson, Greenville and Oconee County in Upstate South Carolina, including Pickens County, Anderson County and Greenville County. Farther out? Call or text 864-525-5598 with your location and we'll let you know. See Easley, Pickens, Anderson, Greenville and Oconee County.

Do you clear HOA detention basins?

Yes. ORA does brush maintenance on dry detention basins for HOAs and property managers. Saplings and brush on the basin floor and side slopes get mulched in place, and nothing has to be hauled out through the neighborhood. Jason walks the basin and gives a firm quote. More on HOA detention basin maintenance.

Do you remove stumps?

Stumps get mulched down to about ground level (to grade). It isn't stump grinding below grade. If you need stumps and roots gone below the surface, for a slab or a lawn for example, mention it on the site walk.

What happens to the mulch?

It stays right where it lands, as a layer of ground cover. The mulch mat protects the topsoil from erosion, holds moisture and breaks down naturally over time. There's nothing to haul off and no piles left behind.

When is the best time of year for forestry mulching?

It can be done year-round. Late fall and winter are great: the leaves are down, you can see what you're working with, and the ticks and snakes are mostly off duty. Spring and fall book up fastest, so reach out early. Most jobs can be scheduled within 1–2 weeks of the site visit.

Will there be brush piles or debris left on my property?

No. That's the whole point. Everything gets ground down in the same pass. Zero brush piles, no burn piles to manage and no waiting on a second crew to haul stuff off.

Is forestry mulching safe for my soil?

Yes. It's one of the gentlest ways to clear land. The mulch protects topsoil, holds moisture and adds organic matter as it breaks down. ORA doesn't use herbicides or burn anything, and root systems stay mostly in place, which keeps the soil from washing out.

Who will actually do the work?

Jason Kitchens, the owner. ORA is owner-operated, with no subcontractors, so the guy who quotes the job is the guy running the machine.
